Twelve nights testing L-DOPA, the dopamine precursor found in velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens), the same Ayurvedic plant historically used for kampavata, a Parkinson’s-like tremor disorder. Thomas Yuschak’s lucid dreaming model treats L-DOPA as a support compound, meant to pair with a lucidity trigger like galantamine. This run removed the trigger entirely to test L-DOPA on its own. Dose ran 100 to 300 milligrams, taken mid-sleep four to five hours in, mostly on an empty stomach.
Across the seven nights with full ratings, vividness nudged up on the strongest nights, reaching a high of 4 against a baseline that otherwise held at 3. Recall and narrative coherence moved in that same narrow band. Hypnagogic imagery and lucidity stayed flat at the floor throughout, on every dose from 100 to 300 milligrams. The strongest night followed almost no sleep the night before, which points to REM rebound as a plausible contributor alongside the compound.
That adds up to a null result on lucidity, matching the prediction going in: without the trigger compound, there’s no lucidity here. Vividness may be doing something modest, but the signal isn’t clean or consistent enough to call it confirmed. Worth testing again at a fixed dose and a fixed routine, to see if that vividness bump holds up on its own.
